Bristol roasts; Part two - bar 44

Something that might seem a bit “basic” for someone as obsessed with food as me, roast dinner is my favourite meal; and I simply won’t be swayed otherwise.

And so continues my roast dinner tour of Bristol, this time we are at Bar 44 is part of the “44 Group”, that describes themselves as

Exemplary food and drink and outstanding service is what the 44 Group are known for. Their passion for Spain knows no bounds. The best of Spain is used with locally sourced superb produce and drinks to give a taste of modern Spain in each of their establishments

And I have to say I mostly agree. On Sunday’s they do a “sharing platter” for two, with the choice of 35-day dry aged picanha of Hereford beef, overnight slow roast Duroc belly pork or Celeriac steak. All of these come with a selection of recognizable roast dinner sides, but with a Bar 44 twist… we are talking jamon fat roast potatoes, manchego cauliflower cheese, and when we went chorizo yorkshire pudding (although it doesn’t say this on the menu today… I hope that hasn’t disappeared!!).

Was this the best roast dinner I have ever had…? Probably not; but it was delicious. I really liked the different take on the classics, and it was also a super generous meal. It cost between £35-£45 for 2 for the roast itself, which I think feels on the higher side of average, but I think in terms of value for money it sits really strongly.

If you love a roast it is familiar enough that you will like it; if you don’t love a roast it is different enough that you will like it… win win!!
